Hi, I just stumbled across your Musicians & Disabilities page, and thought I'd let you know a bit about me. My name is Andrew Hewitt, I am 35 years old and live in Sydney, Australia.
I was born with mild Cerebral Palsy which restricts me to walking on crutches, however despite this, I have managed to clock up over 15 years live band experience in the Australian mainstream music scene.
2004 was huge for me, I was included in Modern Drummer magazine's On The Move section in April's issue. Held various clinics for drummers, and held a workshop for kids with disabilities. Also, I did a 40 minute performance at the Sydney Opera House with a rock band with various musicians with disabilities.
One of my biggest inspirations has always been Rick Allen from Def Leppard.
Cheers, Andrew Hewitt
The "Drums in Motion Project" is a drum therapy workshop program aimed at disabled children.
The main focus for the workshop is Motivation and Therapy. As drums are a physical instrument to play, the workshops are designed to teach children with all severities of disabilities to hold a drum stick which can help with hand and finger movements. Also, the children will learn to play simple drum beats along with music which will help with co-ordination. My teachings during the workshops are based on my own life experiences, having a disability and having to find alternative ways to do things that able-bodied people take for granted. --Andrew Hewitt
